Dungeons & Drogans: Session XXII
Session XXII Summary
Dave and Stephen want to chase Balgron, but John convinces them to explore the corridors first in search of phat lewt.
Coltaine steps on another rune, triggering the throat-tearing scream that damages the Drogans and overwhelms them with terror.
Once they regroup, the Drogans investigate the passage that leads south out of the zombie room, which leads into a crypt filled with sarcophagi. The coffins possess relief images of warriors in plate armor. To the east, the crypt opens into a higher, wider area from which a starry glow emanates.
Everyone but Coltaine notices indecipherable draconic script adorning each sarcophagus. Zook and Autumn hear muffled clicks and scratching noises coming from inside the sarcophagi.
The Drogans take a short rest in the crypt, surrounded by the creepy coffins.
As Autumn moves to investigate the sarcophagi, concussive bangs sound throughout the crypt as each coffin lid slams open, and 10 skeletons emerge, armed with longswords, 6 of which surround Autumn.
As battle commences, more and more skeletons continue to be disgorged by the coffins, eventually doubling the initial number of undead. The skeletons seem to employ the tactics of soldiers or trained guards.
Autumn uses her Fey Step to teleport out from the skeleton surround, but she's already too far wounded. On round 4, she is cut down by the skeletons and fails her first death save.
On round 8, Zook stabilizes Autumn, and after 10 rounds of combat, the battle is over. The final kill count is:
Autumn with 2 kills; Coltaine with 2 kills; Rekoj with 6 kills; and Zook with... 9 kills, the clear King of the Kill.
Session XXII - Part 1 Summary
XP is allotted, and the Drogans reach a milestone after two battles without an extended rest. Dave and Stephen want to chase Balgron, but John convinces them to explore the corridors first in search of phat lewt.
Session XXII - Part 2 Summary
The Drogans explore the corridors and spot another couple runes on the floor, which are strategically placed to block passages.
Coltaine steps on a rune. A throat-tearing scream explodes from the floor. Coltaine, Autumn and Rekoj take 4 necrotic damage and are overwhelmed with terror. After a few moments, they recover and regroup.
Session XXII - Part 3 Summary
In search for a place to rest, the Drogans investigate the passage that leads south out of the zombie room, which leads into a room filled with sarcophagi.
Stephen has a bad feeling about this.
As the Drogans enter the chamber, they see ten sarcophagi lining the crypt. The coffins possess relief images of warriors in plate armor. To the east, the crypt opens into a higher, wider area from which a starry glow emanates.
Everyone but Coltaine notices indecipherable draconic script adorning each sarcophagus. John laments the loss of his dragonborn characters who would have been able to read the text.
Zook and Autumn hear muffled clicks and scratching noises coming from inside the sarcophagi.
The Drogans take a short rest in the crypt, surrounded by creepy coffins.
Autumn is the first to investigate the sarcophagi. As she nears one, concussive bangs sound throughout the crypt as each coffin lid slams open, and clattering clicking bones grope out from each tomb.
10 skeletons emerge, armed with longswords, 6 of which surround Autumn.
Initiative is rolled.
Two skeletons slash Autumn down to 17/29 HP.
Coltaine bolsters Autumn up to full health, making her use her final healing surge. Then the warlord commands Rekoj to attack.
Session XXII - Part 4 Summary
Rekoj pulverizes a skeleton. Getting cocky, he charges another undead and is slashed in the back for 4 damage by a skeleton behind him.
Zook shifts into lynx form.
A skeleton slashes Rekoj down to 40 HP.
Autumn slices a skeleton's head off.
A skeleton slashes Zook down to 28/35 HP.
Round 1 ends.
The two westernmost sarcophagi disgorge two more skeletons.
A blade sinks into autumn, dropping her to 25 HP.
The skeletons seem to be employing the tactics of soldiers or trained guards.
Rekoj fumbles.
Session XXII - Part 5 Summary
Zook attacks two targets with a darting bite, biting into the spine of one skeleton, tearing out its vertebrae, and making it collapse. The second undead dodges.
Autumn uses her Fey Step to teleport out from the skeleton surround.
Coltaine is slashed down to 25/35 HP.
Autumn is flanked and slashed down to 21 HP.
Round 2 ends.
Two more skeletons are disgorged from sarcophagi.
Coltaine takes down a skeleton.
Rekoj uses his Hungry Earth power and takes down 3 skeletons. After the warden's onslaught, only 7 skeletons remain.
Zook shifts out of lynx form and hurls a flame seed, charring a skeleton. It does not go down.
Session XXII - Part 6 Summary
Autumn takes down a skeleton.
The Drogans now notice two of the skeletons are wearing chainmail and holding light shields.
Autumn is slashed down to 17/29 HP.
Round 3 ends.
One of the skeletons burns to the ground from Zook's magic.
Rekoj destroys a skeleton, then uses an action point and takes down a second.
Zook shifts back into lynx form and charges a skeleton, snapping its neck off.
The two armored skeletons slash Autumn down to -2 HP.
Round 4 ends.
Two more skeletons pop out of sarcophagi.
Rekoj calls upon his Stone's Endurance to resist damage, then assumes his Form of Winter's Herald. He uses his second action point and targets the two armored skeletons with his Winter's Herald special attack.
Session XXII - Part 7 Summary
Rekoj misses his first target, but still injures it. The second gets the full effect of the attack. Both are immobilized by the ice.
Zook rends and tears at a skeleton, dismantling it, then shifts out of his lynx form.
An immobilized skeleton slashes Rekoj, but thanks to the goliath's damage resistance, he takes only 1 damage.
Autumn fails her first death save.
A skeleton slashes Coltaine down to 21/35 HP.
Round 5 ends.
Two more skeletons pop from coffins.
Coltaine commands Rekoj to attack an armored skeleton. Rekoj fumbles.
The two armored skeletons slash Rekoj down to 21/52 HP.
A longsword slashes Coltaine down to 21/35 HP, while a second slashes Zook down to 24/35 HP.
Round 6 ends.
No more skeletons issue from the coffins.
Coltaine bolsters Rekoj with inspiring words.
Session XXII - Part 8 Summary
Coltaine orders Rekoj to hit an armored skeleton, then spends an action point to order him to hit a second time. Rekoj lands the first attack, but misses with the second.
Rekoj attacks an armored skeleton, visibly wounding it.
Zook hurls a flame seed at a group of skeletons, provoking an Opportunity Attack that slashes him down to 20/35 HP. Zook rolls a natural 20 with his flame seed, incinerating the target skeleton and three others.
Rekoj is slashed down to 33/52 HP.
Round 7 ends.
Coltaine commands Rekoj to attack, and the goliath fumbles again.
Rekoj visibly wounds the second armored skeleton.
Zook stabilizes Autumn.
Rekoj is slashed down to 23/52 HP.
Round 8 ends.
Coltaine takes down a skeleton.
Rekoj hits an armored skeleton again.
Zook shifts into lynx form and pounces on an armored skeleton, taking it down, cherry-picking Rekoj's kill.
The remaining armored skeleton slashes Zook down to 17/35 HP.
Round 9 ends.
Coltaine hits the armored skeleton.
Session XXII - Part 9 Summary
Rekoj advances, hoping to land the finishing blow on the last skeleton, and although he hits it, the skeleton is left reeling, not dead.
Zook moves in to steal Rekoj's kill, but he misses.
The skeleton slashes Zook down to 11/35 HP.
Round 10 ends.
Coltaine commands Zook to attack the skeleton, but Zook misses again.
Rekoj swings his battleaxe; the skeleton brings up his sword to parry; Rekoj chops through the sword and into the skeleton, and it drops.
The session ends with Dave saying that they should never allow Autumn to do anything anymore. The players also realize they've forgotten about Splug again, and Stephen realizes he's a lot further away from leveling than he thought.
