Evil PCs can ruin campaigns with constant backstabbing, angry players, and uncomfortable situations. But evil PCs can also be a source of great inter-party conflict. The question then is, how do you ensure that evil PCs add to the game instead of detract?
This week's
Quick Tip offers three DM tips for dealing with evil PCs.

Introducing a new player to D&D is a great experience, but sometimes, it's difficult to know how best to teach neophytes the game. The PHB and DMG provide some basic guidance, but it still leaves some questions unanswered.

Quick Tip offers three DM tips for teaching new players how to play.

D&D Quick Tips - Getting Organized

Your D&D session can really get away from you sometimes -- the clock says it's time to head home, yet the PCs have barely accomplished anything. Where did the time go? Did your session lack structure and lead to aimless meandering? Did you spend a half hour trying to figure out the grappling rules? Was time lost as you rifled through your notes in search of an NPC's stat block?
This week's
Quick Tip offers three organizational tips for DMs.

D&D Quick Tips - Dealing With Cheaters

Cheating. It's unfortunate, but it happens, especially among younger players. A friend of mine who DMed his younger brother and neighbor would frequently tell me that he was astounded by the amazing luck his players had -- they would always roll 18s and 19s. His brother later confided in me that he and his friend would cheat -- they would roll their dice right in front of the DM screen so that my friend couldn't see the result. The two would corroborate each others' rolls, and my fri... Continue reading ...
D&D Quick Tips - Avoiding the Monty Haul

Monty Hall was a delightful character, but the campaigns inspired by his name should be avoided like the Tarrasque. Being rewarded oodles of magic items too quickly leads to campaign burnout. This week's Quick Tip takes a look at how to avoid a Monty Haul campaign,
both as a player and as a DM. Continue reading ...

Puzzles... Be they mazes, riddles, and logic brainteasers, puzzles have been a staple of D&D dungeon crawls since the dawn of this hobby. But how do you prevent your players from becoming frustrated by your puzzles? How do you get them to try to solve them and not simply ignore them in search of the next hunk of monster meat to fillet? In last Sunday's Quick
Tip on Engaging Players in Puzzles, I offered three pieces of advice on
designing and running puzzles that will engage your players. Continue reading ...
D&D Quick Tips - Skill Challenges

Skill challenges... the most exciting and the most disappointing new feature of 4th Edition. The concept of an encounter focused on skills instead of combat is fantastic, but when 4e shipped, skill challenges were terribly broken and the sample challenges were insipid. Thankfully, the Dungeon Master's Guide 2 rectified many of the issues and dolled out some sound advice and solid examples of what skill challenges should be. In today's Quick Tip on Skill Challenges, I offer three pieces of advic... Continue reading ...

D&D Quick Tips - Combat-Focused Players

We've all seen the player type: the guy who just sits around with dice in hand, waiting for combat to start. He doesn't know what's going on; he doesn't know why he's fighting; he doesn't care. When you have a whole party of combat-focused players, you should craft a story that will keep this type of player engaged, rather than let him dawdle off and play X-Box. Today's Quick Tip offers three ingredients to a story that will engage combat-focused players. Continue reading ...

New Website Design

I've given the site a complete makeover -- I really needed to get rid of all those copyrighted images. I went for a retro, 3rd Edition Player's Handbook feel, with the leather cover, gold trim and blazing red title. This probably won't be the final design I'll stick with, but it'll do for now. Those red letters just don't work for me, but I don't know how to fix them. I emulated the PHB title as best as I could. Continue reading ...
